<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="color:black;font-family:&quot;"><span style="font-size:small;">Let&#8217;s try and understand the SharePoint Architecture &amp; Object Model in a simple and easy way:</span></span></p>
<p>First of all, if we want to talk about SharePoint Architecture then I believe everyone knows the fact that it is a three-tier architecture:</p>
<p>1) Web Front-End/Presentation/User Interface -&gt; Web Browser, Office Applications<br />
2) Application Tier -&gt; IIS 6.0, DotNet Framework 2.0, WSS 3.0, MOSS 2007<br />
3) Database Tier/Back-End Tier -&gt; SQL Server 2005: Admin Content, Configuration, Content, Shared Services, Search</p>
<p>Next, let&#8217;s try and understand about SharePoint Object Model&#8230;&#8230;</p>
<p>The Object hierarchy in SharePoint follows this path:</p>
<p>SPWebServer -&gt; SPVirtualServer -&gt; SPSite -&gt; SPWeb -&gt; SPList -&gt; SPListItem</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="color:black;font-family:&quot;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Document libraries are collections of files that you can share with team members on a Web based on Microsoft Windows Share Point Services. For example, you can create a library of common documents for a project, and team members can use their Web browsers to find the files, read them, and make comments. Users with Microsoft Office 2003 can check out and edit the files as if they resided on a local or network drive.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">By default, your team Web site comes with a built-in document library named Shared Documents, which is listed on the Quick Launch bar as well as on the Documents and Lists page.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">When you have successfully created a new site, By Default If you created your Site by using Team Site Template, than Shared Document Library is already there.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Content Types</span></span></span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:14pt;"><span style="text-decoration:none;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></span></span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Content types are a way to manage the metadata and behavior of a document, list items or a folder in a centralized way. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Content types (content type: A reusable group of settings for a category of content. Use content types to manage the metadata, templates, and behaviors of items and documents consistently. Content types are defined at the site level and used on lists and libraries.) enable organizations to organize, manage, and handle content in a consistent way across a site collection. By defining content types for specific kinds of documents or information products, an organization can ensure that each of these groups of content is managed in a consistent way.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">In the course of a single project, a business might produce several different kinds of content, for example, proposals, legal contracts, statements of work, and product design specifications. Although these documents might be stored together because they are related to a single project, they can be created, used, shared, and retained in different ways. A business might want to collect and maintain different kinds of metadata about each kind of content.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 enables organizations to define these different sets of documents as content types. A content type is a group of reusable settings that describe the shared behaviors for a specific type of content. Content types can be defined for any item type in Office SharePoint Server 2007, including documents, list items, and folders. Each content type can specify:</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Wingdings;"><span>à</span></span><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"> The columns (metadata) that you want to assign to items of this type</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Wingdings;"><span>à</span></span><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"> he information management policies that are associated with items of this content type.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Content types provide organizations with a way to manage and organize content consistently across different lists and libraries in a site collection (site collection: A set of Web sites on a virtual server that have the same owner and share administration settings. Each site collection contains a top-level Web site and can contain one or more subsites.), and they also make it possible for a single list or library to contain multiple item types or document types.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:18pt;margin:22.5pt 0 11.25pt;"><span style="color:#000000;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:16pt;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Information Rights Management (IRM)</span></span></span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:16pt;"><span style="text-decoration:none;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></span></span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">Information Rights Management (IRM) enables you to limit the actions that users can take on files that have been downloaded from Share Point lists or libraries. IRM encrypts the downloaded files and limits the set of users and programs that are allowed to decrypt these files. IRM can also limit the rights of the users who are allowed to read files so that they cannot take actions such as print copies of the files or copy text from them. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">You can use IRM on lists or libraries to limit the dissemination of sensitive content. For example, if you are creating a document library to share information about upcoming products with selected marketing representatives, you can use IRM to prevent these individuals from sharing this content with other employees in the company.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">On an Office Share Point Server 2007 site, you apply IRM to an entire list or library, rather than to individual files. This makes it easier to ensure a consistent level of protection for an entire set of documents or files. IRM can thus help your organization to enforce corporate policies that govern the control and dissemination of confidential or proprietary information.</span></p>
